Just finished an oak + red spruce, ladder brace, 12 fret, J-185. It is my attempt at a fancy guitar based on some of the work that Gibson did on guitars and banjos in the 20's and 30's. It was a lot of fun and I was able to involve a couple of local craftspeople. By the way, did you know a banjo is a guitar whose parents were first cousins?

The oak and red spruce will take a while to open up, but for now it has that ladder braced sound with a bit less sustain and a bluesy sound.

Here is the guitar:

And for those of you who haven't seen this sort of thing enough times, here is the whole thing:

Wow! That's lovely, and it took some guts. ;) Love the sparkle purflings/rosette and the scrimshawed MOTS. The oak looks great as well.

I'm sure the sound will open up. FWIW I prefer ladder braced guitars with medium or a bit thicker strings, but I'm sure it depends...

Spectacular!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
